Der 13. Grazer BSD Stammtisch findet am Mittwoch 18. Jänner um 19:00 in gewohnter Umgebung statt. Trotz Unglückszahl 13 im Desasterjahr 2012 gibt es sicher genug Pizza und Bier für alle!

Trip Report: BSDDay 2011 in Bratislava

This year’s BSDDay was in Bratislava (Slovakia) which is only a 2.5 hours drive from Graz so we were quite happy that we could attend. It was a bit bigger this year and there were a lot of interesting talks worth watching and as usual it’s always very interesting to talk to other developers face to face. Plans were to meet on Friday afternoon in an Italian restaurant with all the other speakers and invited guests but it turned out to be a bit difficult without GPS signal for whatever reason. However it was in walking distance and after half an hour we found it nevertheless. So we ended up drinking czech beer and waiting for pizza with all the usual suspects.

Saturday started way too early at 8am driving to the university still without GPS signal and we somehow managed to take the wrong bus stop so we had to walk around a bit. Walking in the cold without proper navigation helps fully waking up! It wasn’t even surprising anymore that right in front of the University the GPS signal started working again. Great thing!

I used the time between the talks to annoy itetcu with some advertising for redports and updated our development ports for virtualbox to 4.1.6. Later that day Michael Ranner told me that PC-BSD 9 in VirtualBox isn’t fully able to provide all guest features even if the guest additions PBI is installed. A quick test turned out that he is right and the reason for this was found quickly. It’s because the PBI is not correctly enabling the guest services. This problem has been reported to Kris Moore and he already fixed it in the PBI.

After all the talks were heard we had a dinner together with all invited guests and made some plans for the BSDDay next year which will be held in Vienna (Austria). So the Vienna BSD Stammtisch and Grazer BSD Stammtisch will help organize this event next year and I hope you will attend!

BSD Day 2011

BSDDay takes place on Saturday 5th November 2011 in Bratislava, Slovakia with about 15 talks covering FreeBSD 9, ZFS, the new NetBSD Firewall, Kernel Mode Lua, FreeBSD Ports & Packages and a lot more. Check out the BSDDay 2011 homepage for a complete list of talks.

We will attend with 3 people from the Grazer BSD Stammtisch and also around 3 people from the Vienna BSD Stammtisch and bring back some pictures from the trip for your entertainment. If you want to join us from Austria please get in contact with us to arrange a hotel room and a possibility to get to the event.

The purpose of this one-day event is to gather Central European developers of today’s open-source BSD systems, popularize their work, and provide an interface for real-life communication. There are no formalities, no papers, and no registration or participation fee, however the invited developers are encouraged to give a talk on their favorite BSD-related topic, then have a beer with the other folks around. The language of this event is English, and the goal is to motivate potential future developers and users, especially undergraduate university students to work with BSD systems.

Grazer Linuxtage 2011

Die ganztägige Veranstaltung (9:00 bis 18:30 Uhr) richtet sich mit zahlreichen Vorträgen und Informationsständen nach den Interessen der Zielgruppen Anwender, Administratoren und Softwareentwickler.

Dieses Jahr gibt es zum ersten mal einen eigenen Track speziell für BSD mit diversen Live-Vorführungen zur Installation und Administration von FreeBSD und tiefergehende Vorträge im Umgang mit BSD.

Während der gesamten Veranstaltung, aber natürlich speziell in den Pausen zwischen den Vorträgen, können Besucher zusätzlichen Wissensdurst an den Infoständen international renommierter Projekte stillen.

Außerdem wird neben einem BSD Stand auch die Möglichkeit geboten eine BSDA Certification abzulegen.
